Lessons on Vulnerability

Alright, if you haven’t fallen in love with TedTalks yet.. now’s the time to go check that out.  I had no idea what it was, I had always just scrolled past it on Netflix but, it’s a true gem I’m obsessed with now.

My first TedTalks I watched was “The Power of Vulnerability” by Brene Brown and it really put into perspective for me why people do what they do.   Why is it common place in our society to hide who we truly are, why do we feel unworthy of the best life possible?  Why are we constantly cycling through thoughts in our head that we aren’t good enough, skinny enough, smart enough, whatever it might be.  You know what I’m talking about.. we’ve all done it from time to time.

It really comes back to a fear of disconnection and the vulnerability we feel when we begin to start showing who we truly are, who we want to be.  It’s that voice in our heads, is there something about me that if people knew about it, I would end up disconnected from everyone, cast aside?

I’ve lived in this shameful place a large majority of my life.  Always doing what I thought others wanted me to do, not wanting to stand out too much, always looking for approval and acceptance out of this fear of being disconnected.  I’m sure you can relate.  I have been working so hard on this the past few weeks, and I want you to know it’s not going to magically change for you overnight- but it’s getting wayyyy better.  It’s going to take a little bit of uncomfort for a little while but it is all worth it.  Because when you are finally yourself, like I’m talking 100% unapologetically yourself, the way you want to be, the things you want to do, the hobbies you want to be apart of it- you’ll find you’re more connected and closer to people than you’ve ever felt before.  People find that INTERESTING about you! It doesn’t mean everyone is going to be your biggest fan, but that’s okay.   You’re going to step into your own and dare greatly, and I promise this is the most wonderful place in the world when you can fully embrace it.

Do you gratitude journal?

I have heard a little bit about writing down what you’re thankful for in the past.. and honestly I just thought it was so that we could learn to “appreciate the small things” and that was it.  Just be happy you have food on the table because a lot of people in the world don’t, type of gratitude.

Through my last year and a half with Arbonne, I have come to learn a TON about gratitude journals.. and there’s a heck of a lot more to it than being thankful for your food so that one day you don’t wake up starving.  Through my mentors and the books I have read since starting my business.. it’s very evident:  being thankful for what we have allows rooms for more good things to come into our lives.

Seriously, there’s no magic here.  People have been practicing this for a very very long time.  If you’re new to this whole concept, I’d suggest you watch “The Secret” (yup it’s on Netflix!).  This will begin to make a whole lot more sense.  But I have officially filled my first full gratitude journal and going back to read through it was pretty awesome.  Some days it really was:  I’m so thankful that it’s sunny today, I like the sunshine.  Other days, a little more heartfelt:  I’m so thankful I have the opportunity to change so many peoples lives with my business.

Beauty in this, there’s really no wrong way to go about your gratitude journal.  So I’m just wondering, if you wrote in a journal write now, what would you be most thankful for?
